Sony Launches the Xperia R1 and Xperia R1 Plus in India

Sony has been struggling to make a profit in the mobile space lately, and had decided to limit the number of devices they plan on releasing each year. Since then, the company has been focusing on the mid-range and high-end segments and today they just announced two mid-range devices for the Indian market. The two new smartphones are the Xperia R1 and the Xperia R1 Plus which Sony claims are "designed for Indian lifestyle" and "designed to excite the new Indian."

Both the Xperia R1 and the Xperia R1 Plus feature Sony's current design language, which we've become quite familiar with so far this year. It has been rumored that a new design will debut sometime in the future, but for now they continue to leverage their OmniBalance design style. The Xperia R1 comes equipped with a 5.2″ TFT LCD display with a screen resolution of 1,280 x 720. Then we have the Snapdragon 430 SoC powering the device with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

It does come with a microSD card slot for those who want to expand the storage a bit more, and it has dual SIM support, an FM radio and a USB Type-C port. The back of the Xperia R1 has a 13MP sensor that uses Sony's Predictive Hybrid Autofocus technology and this is paired with an 8MP camera (with the same autofocus tech) on the front of the device. Inside there is a 2,620mAh capacity battery and Android Nougat will be installed on it out of the box (while Sony is already shipping Oreo devices).

The Xperia R1 Plus has the same specs listed above, except it comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The regular R1 is being priced at INR 13,990 (which is about $215) while the Xperia R1 Plus will cost you INR 15,990 (which is about $245). Both variants will be available in Black and Silver color options.
