Unlocked HTC U11 will Start Receiving the Android Oreo Update Tomorrow

Regardless of your feelings about Sense UI, HTC's arguably light OEM skin, there's no denying that the software has become one of the strongest points of HTC as of recently. The Taiwanese company announced an Android Oreo update for their devices just a few days after the first release of said Android version. And sometime later, they managed to launch two of the first devices on the market to come with Android 8.0 out of the box: the HTC U11+ and the HTC U11 Life Android One Edition.

Now, HTC is preparing to follow through their promises and begin their official Android Oreo rollout on their flagship line, starting with the unlocked edition of the HTC U11. After an initial rollout in Taiwan, HTC's vice president of product management, Mo Versi, has taken to Twitter to announce that Android Oreo is slated to start rolling out this Monday, November 27th, for the unlocked variant of the HTC U11. Note that we're talking about the unlocked, retail variant of the U11, and carrier versions are going to receive the update later on.

Have in mind that the U11 isn't the only phone from HTC receiving the update. The Oreo update will also be coming to the HTC U Ultra and the HTC 10 presumably during the first quarter of 2018. The U11 rollout does make HTC one of the first companies to officially release the newest version of Android to existing devices: as of now, only Sony (Xperia XZ, Xperia XZs, Xperia XZ Premium), Nokia (Nokia 8), and OnePlus (OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T) are rolling out stable Android 8.0 updates at the moment, with Samsung and Essential working on beta programs.

If you own an unlocked HTC U11, be sure to check for an OTA update coming to your device on Monday. The update should be identical to what we've seen on its bigger, 18:9 brother, the HTC U11+. It remains to be seen, however, if the device will support Project Treble.
