Google Planning to Open Brick-and-Mortar Stores in India to Increase Google Pixel Sales

Google's planning to open brick -and-mortar stores in India to help boost sales of Google Pixel devices in the country, according to three sources who spoke to Telecom from the Economic Times. The search giant hired a key Apple executive to help with the expansion, and plans to open "experience stores" where users can try out the new features.

Google was reportedly encouraged to open new locations after the massive interest that followed its pop-up Google Pixel 2 stores around the country, which included the High Street Phoenix shopping center in Mumbai and the Mall of India in Delhi-NCR. India's technological growth is among the fastest in the world, and Google's presence is lacking in comparison to competitors like Apple, Vivo and Xiaomi.

It's unclear whether Google will open its own stores or outsource the operations to a third party. Apple's seeking a single-brand license to open its own stores in India, and Google might do the same.

Google declined to comment on rumors and speculation.

The company's brick-and-mortar stores in India are likely to open in mid-to-late 2018, so it won't be long before Google makes an official announcement. But its plans are subject to change — it might decide to cancel the new stores altogether.
