Popular Android Video Player, MX Player, Reportedly Bought by Indian Media Giant for $200 Million

Media players are big business, these days — it's not uncommon to hear about video-playing apps receiving investments from venture capital firms or being flat-out purchased in multimillion-dollar acquisitions. One of the most popular video players on Android is MX Player, and this week, it was reportedly acquired by Indian media giant Times Internet Limited (TIL) for $200 million.

According to a report from Beebom — which has yet to be corroborated by J2 Interactive, the South Korea-based development team behind MX Player, as of publication time — Times Internet Limited is very committed to the application and has plans to expand it once the purchase has been approved. The company, which has a huge presence on the web and mobile app stores in India, reportedly plans to transform MX Player into a video streaming platform rather than keep with the app's current standalone video player functionality. The extent of what Times Internet Limited is planning isn't clear right now, though, so we'll have to wait and see how things play out before drawing any conclusions.

If you've ever looked at any "best Android video player" list on the web or asked the community for suggestions, then MX Player is bound to have shown up somewhere. MX Player has garnered between 100 million and 500 million downloads on the Google Play store, and it's so popular within the XDA community that it has its own dedicated forum. That's with good reason — it's worked well for years and continues to be the go-to video player for many folks with Android devices.

For those who'd rather seek alternatives to MX Player in light of the potential buyout, there are plenty to choose from. The Plex Android client lets you play local media files even if you don't have a server to connect to it, and we've covered VLC extensively on XDA.
