Report: Google Play app downloads lead iOS App Store by 145%

In 2017, smartphone app revenue grew by 35 percent across Android and iOS, according to Sensor Tower, with users spending $38.5 billion in Apple's App Store compared to $20.1 billion in the Google Play Store. This week, a report from App Annie shows that, while app sales in the iOS App Store had a significant lead on Google Play Store sales in 2017, it was a different story when it came to overall download rates. Google's Play Store saw a whopping 145 percent more application downloads than Apple's App Store.

In fact, the Google Play Store recorded its highest-ever download rates in 2017, peaking during the holiday season with 19 billion downloads in the final quarter of 2017. (Note that the number only includes new downloads, not re-installs or app updates.) A large portion of downloads came from developing markets like India, Indonesia, and Brazil; emerging markets drove Google Play's downloads to grow 10 percent year-over-year. India actually surpassed the US in terms of app downloads across iOS and Android.

The US held the number one spot in the App Store and Play Store when it came to consumer spend market share in 2017, and saw the strongest year-over-year growth. On the Google Play Store, South Korea took the second spot while the Apple App Store had Taiwan in the same place. Germany was the number three country in both app stores.

Mobile users spent a collective $17 billion dollars on applications across Android and iOS in Q4 2017, with both the App Store and Play Store experiencing over 20 percent year-over-year growth in revenue. But iOS continued to hold its substantial sales revenue lead, accounting for $11.5 billion of the total app sales revenue globally.

According to App Annie, the greatest source of revenue growth was the introduction of in-app subscriptions in video apps. Productivity apps, too, led the charge on Google Play, thanks in part to the introduction of app subscriptions for Google Drive storage.
