Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ Specifications and Renders Leaked

It wasn't long after the release of the Galaxy Note 8 that people began to speculate about the Galaxy S9 and its larger sibling, the Galaxy S9+. We've seen a lot of rumors about it, and even heard from Samsung that it'll be unveiled at a press event on February 25 in Barcelona, Spain.

The company will take the wraps off the Galaxy S9 and S9+ right before Mobile World Congress 2018, but the cat's been let out of the bag a bit early. Newly leaked renders and hardware specifications come courtesy of Evan Blass at VentureBeat, who has a reliable track record when it comes to smartphone leaks and rumors.

The newly leaked renders show the Galaxy S9 and S9+'s (code-named "Star" and "Star 2", respectively) design, which doesn't look all that different from the Galaxy S8 and S8+'s. But it's been subtly refined inside and out.

There are stereo speakers on the bottom, and a fingerprint scanner around back. We're told the display size of the Galaxy S9 will be 5.8 inches, and that the larger Galaxy S9 will have a 6.2-inch screen. In the United States and China, the two handsets will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip, and the rest of the world will get a variant with Samsung's Exynos 9810 chipset.

The standard Galaxy S9 will come with 4GB of RAM paired with 64GB of internal storage, and the S9+ will ship with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. (It's an interesting design decision — anyone who prefers the Galaxy S8's smaller display will have to make due with less RAM.)

As indicated by the teaser image Samsung revealed this week, a major focus of the phones will be the cameras. The rear camera can reportedly detect motion and capture "super slow-mo" video in 480fps at 720p, and the primary 12MP cameras are said to have a variable aperture. There's a mechanical adjustment that switches between f/2.4 and smallest-in-class f/1.5, according to the report.

The Galaxy S9+ adds a secondary rear camera module with a 12MP sensor and a standard fixed aperture, and both phones have 8MP front-facing cameras.

According to VentureBeat, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will begin shipping and selling through retail outlets on March 16. There's no word on pre-order availability yet, but we're hoping to learn more in the coming weeks.
