TCL Announces Alcatel 5 and Alcatel 3 Series Phones, 1T Series Tablets, and Android Go Phone

On the eve of Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, Spain, Chinese smartphone maker TCL took the wraps off a menagerie of new devices on Saturday. In addition to the Alcatel 5, Alcatel 3, and Alcatel 1 Series smartphones that the company teased at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in January, it also unveiled two Android tables, the 1T 10 and 1T7, and an Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphone, the Alcatel 1X.

Alcatel 5, Alcatel 3, and Alcatel 1 Series

The new Alcatel-branded smartphones — the Alcatel 1, Alcatel 3, and Alcatel 1 Series — headline TCL's product portfolio. The lineups come at a different price points and offer distinct sets of features, but every 2018 Alcatel phone shares three three things in common: a FullView 18:9 display, which TCL claims makes them "smaller" and "easier to hold" than previous Alcatel devices; Face Key, a facial recognition technology that records hundreds of biometric data points in less than half a second; and a fingerprint sensor.

Additionally, TCL says that all of its 2018 smartphones will receive regular Android security updates, at a minimum on a quarterly basis.

The Alcatel 5 is the undisputed flagship of the bunch. It boasts a premium brushed metallic unibody design and a 5.7-inch HD+ (1440 x 720) IPS screen, a MediaTek MT6750 octa-core processor (with four 1.5GHz cores and four 1GHz cores), and a 3,000mAh battery (TCL pegs it at 18 hours of talk time). The phone comes in two configurations, one with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage and one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (both expandable via microSD card up to 32GB), and both sport a rear fingerprint sensor.

The phone's fingerprint sensor does more than just lock it away from prying eyes. Preprogrammed shortcuts let you use it as a shutter key when you're taking selfies, hide information when you enable the phone's privacy mode, and launch apps corresponding with certain fingers.

In terms of cameras, the Alcatel 5 has a 12MP rear sensor with a f/2.2 aperture and 1.25μm sensor size, dual-tone flash, electronic image stabilization (EIS), high dynamic range (HDR), and a slow-motion toggle. The front camera packs two sensors into a single module: a 13MP sensor with a f/2.0 aperture, and a 5MP sensor with a 120-degree wide-angle lens, 1.4μm pixel size, and LED flash. The phone's camera app switches between the two for you if you so choose, automatically selecting the wide-angle mode when it detects more than two faces in a shot.

The Alcatel 5's photo-centric features don't stop there. It ships with Social Mode, a suite of photo editing tools like Social Square, which lets you preview photos you recently took without navigating away from the camera viewfinder, and Instant Collage, which provides colorful templates for your favorite photos. There's also Photo Booth, which snaps four pictures in a row at a rate of one shot per second in order to capture the best shot.

The Alcatel 5's other accouterments include Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, an FM radio, a USB 2.0 Type-C connector, LTE Cat. 4 connectivity (150 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up), FM radio, and Wi-Fi 802.11/b/g/n.

It's available in select markets in Metallic Black and Metallic Gold for €229,99 ($281.54), and ships with Android Nougat.

The Alcatel 3 series, a slight step down from the Alcatel 5 series, ditches the metallic body for a curved, 2.5D contoured glass design. Three phones round out the mid-range collection: the Alcatel 3V, the Alcatel 3X, and the Alcatel 3.

The Alcatel 3V, the largest of the three, has a 6-inch 2K (2160 x 1080) screen, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB/32GB of storage (expandable up to 128GB with a microSD card). It packs a  3,000mAh battery that delivers up to 14 hours of talk time, and a MediaTek MT8735A quad-core processor that's clocked at 1.45GHz.

The Alcatel 3V, not to be completely outdone by the Alcatel 5, boasts impressive shooters. The 5MP selfie camera has an LED flash, EIS, and HDR, plus the aforementioned Instant Collage feature. And its dual rear camera module, a 12MP (1/2.8″ sensor size and f/2.2 aperture) and a 2MP sensor (1/5″ sensor size and  f/2.4 aperture) with an LED flash, phase detection autofocus, a 1.25μm pixel size, can add a bokeh effect to pictures in real time and change the area of focus on any shot.

The Alcatel 3V doesn't have a USB Type-C connector. But it makes do with MicroUSB and Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, Cat. 4 LTE, 802.11/b/g/n, and a dual SIM slot.

The Alcatel 3X, the 3V's slightly smaller sibling, has a 5.7-inch HD+ (1440 x 720) IPS screen, a MediaTek MT6739 quad-core 1.28HGz processor, and a 3,000mAh battery (6 hours of talk time). It comes in two configurations, 2GB/3GB of RAM and 16/32GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128GB via microSD card), and packs equally capable cameras.

The rear shooter consists of a 13MP sensor (with 1/3.06″ sensor size, f/2.0 aperture, and 78.4-degree lens) and a 5MP sensor (with a 1/5″ sensor size, f/2.2 aperture, and 120-degree lens). A dual-tone flash provides illumination in dimly lit environments, and HDR and EIS improve clarity.

The Alcatel 3X has dual-microphone noise cancellation and, like the Alcatel 3V, a MicroUSB port. It supports Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Rounding out the Alcatel 3 Series is the Alcatel 3, a 5.5-inch phone with an HD+ (1440 x 720) display, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (expandable to 128GB via microSD card), a MediaTek 6739 1,28GHz quad-core processor, and a 3,000mAh battery (up to 17 hours of talk time).

The Alcatel 3 is the cheapest phone in the Alcatel 3 Series, and it shows: it sports a single 13MP camera (with an LED flash, PDAF, 1.12μm pixel size, 1/3" sensor size, and f/2.0 aperture) as opposed to the dual camera modules on the Alcatel 3V and Alcatel 3X, and a 5MP front-facing camera with an LED flash. It's also got a MediaTek MT6739 quad-core 1.28GHz processor, a microUSB port, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, Cat. 4 LTE, a dual-SIM slot, and a 3,000mAh battery that lasts up to 17 hours on 3G.

The Alcatel 3V and Alcatel 3 come in Spectrum Black, Spectrum Blue, and Spectrum Gold (with the availability of each color varying by country), and the Alcatel 3X ships in Metallic Black, Metallic Blue, and Metallic Gold. The 3V is available for €189,99 ($233.58), and the Alcatel 3X and Alcatel 3 retail next month in select markets for €179,99 ($220.07) and €149,99 ($184.41), respectively.

With the exception of the Alcatel 3X, which runs Android Nougat, all phones in the Alcatel 3 series ship with Android Oreo onboard.

Android Oreo (Go edition)

The Alcatel 1 Series — TCL's affordable, entry-level alternative to the Alcatel 3 Series and Alcatel 5 Series — doesn't cut as many corners as you might expect.

The Alcatel 1X, which comes in a suede and soft touch finish, has a 5.3-inch FWVGA (960 x 480) display, a MediaTek MT6739 quad-core processor clocked at 1.28GHz, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (expandable to 3GB via microSD card), and a 2,460mAh battery. It has a dual rear camera with an 8MP sensor and a 13MP sensor, the latter of which has a 1.12μm pixel size, a 1/4″ inch sensor size, a f/2.0 aperture, and a flash module; and a 5MP front-facing camera with fixed focus.

Other highlights include Cat. 4 LTE connectivity, a fingerprint sensor, an FM radio, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, a microUSB connector, and a dual SIM slot.

You won't find features like HDR and electronic image stabilization on the Alcatel 1X. But it ships with Face Key and Social Mode, and notably, it's the first Alcatel phone to market with Android Oreo (Go edition), an optimized version of Android designed for devices with 1GB of RAM or less. The 1X comes with a suite of slimmed-down, data-sipping apps including YouTube Go, Google Go, Files Go, Google Maps Go, and Gmail Go, as well as tailored versions of Chrome, Google Play, and Gboard. And it features the Google Assistant for Android (Go edition), a less-intensive version of the Google Assistant for Android with fewer features. (The only supported language is English, and it can't set reminders or control smart home devices.)

The Alcatel 1X will be available in four colors — Black, Blue, Gold, and Rose Gold — in April with single-SIM and dual-SIM options at €99,99 ($122.93) and €109,99 ($135.23), respectively.

In addition to four new smartphones, TCL made something of a surprise announcement with the 1T series, an all-new Android tablet lineup with compact devices that don't break the bank. Both tablets in the 1T series come with Eye Care mode, a mode that's designed to relieve visual fatigue by minimizing blue light exposure, and Kids Mode, a suite of family-friendly kids games, a camera app, and a drawing app and a parental control panel that lets parents set usage limits. They ship with Android 8.1 Oreo.

The Alcatel 1T 10, the larger of the two tablets, weighs just 415g — TCL claims it's the "lightest tablet you can get" in its size and price range. It boasts a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128GB via microSD card), and a 4,000mAh battery that lasts up to eight hours on a charge.

A MediaTek MT8321 1.3GHz quad-core processor keeps the slate humming, and a 2MP rear camera and front-facing 2MP camera handle photography duties. The Alcatel 1T 10's also got Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, FM radio, a microUSB connector, and support for Miracast.

The Alcatel 1T 7, which has a 7-inch (1024 x 600) IPS display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128GB), and a 2,580mAh battery, is about half the weight (245g) of its big sibling. It has two cameras, one 2MP sensor on the back and a 2MP sensor on the front, and lacks support for Miracast, but otherwise matches its specifications blow for blow.

The Alcatel 1T 10 and Alcatel 1T  will be available later in Q2 across Europe, Latin America, and Asia, starting at €99,99 ($122.93) and €69,99 ($86.05), respectively. Both will come in Premium Black and Bluish Black colors. An optional Bluetooth keyboard and textured cover are available for the 1T 10.
