The OnePlus 6 will have a glass back

The OnePlus 6 has been the subject of many leaks and rumors over the past few weeks. OnePlus has also slowly confirmed several features. The most notable feature so far is the controversial display notch, which OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei explained in detail. Co-founder Pete Lau tried to quell some concerns by letting users know they will be able to "hide" the notch. The next official feature announcement is all about the design.

In a forum post titled "Our Approach to Honest Design," Pete Lau goes into detail about the design. He shares a glimpse of an official render (above) and some design sketches. Lau confirms the OnePlus 6 will indeed have a glass back. This is the first time OnePlus has used a glass back since the OnePlus X. The 6 will retain the signature "horizon line" and curved back design.

OnePlus 6's glass design is centered around creating a "sense of value" and "premium hand-feel." As I mentioned at the beginning, people relate deeply to the products they use. We gave a lot of thought to how users should feel when they use the OnePlus 6. The advantages of glass over metal are manifold: glass communicates a transparent, bright, and pure feeling. The way glass transforms under different lighting is a particularly important challenge—the OnePlus design team tested over 70 glass prototypes before selecting the best one.

Lau talks about how glass transforms under different lighting and the teaser image shows off a new purple color. It's possible this new glass design could feature a wide range of color options or a gradient like the Huawei P20 Pro. It's clear that OnePlus takes design very seriously, even if their customers do not. OnePlus phones have been popular among Android diehards who want the best specs for a fair price. The OnePlus 6 is trying to be more than that. What are your thoughts on the switch to glass?
