Android P on Google Pixel 2 may bring automatic color mode adjustments

When the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were launched last year, there was a lot of fuss about the color of the OLED display. Some users complained about the display looking dull, so Google added a new color mode. The current color modes are Natural, Boosted, and Saturated. Android P, however, could bring a new "Automatic" color mode to the Pixel 2.

The strings below are from the Settings APK in Android P Developer Preview 2. We found a reference to an "Automatic" color mode that currently doesn't exist. The mode will be able to adjust between vivid and accurate colors.

This would be an interesting feature if it works well. Sometimes you want rich and vivid colors, but other times it's better to see things more "true-to-life." An Automatic mode would allow the user to enjoy the benefits of all the color modes. We can't say for certain how this mode will work, but there's a very good chance it will involve machine learning and artificial intelligence. After all, it is from Google.

We're glad to see Google is taking display color more seriously. They may have underrated how much people care about it with the launch of the Pixel 2. That doesn't seem to be the case with this new Automatic mode. What color mode do you prefer for OLED displays? Would you use an Automatic mode?
