Nokia 7 Plus gets update in India to enable dual 4G VoLTE on both SIMs

HMD Global launched its 2018 smartphone portfolio at Mobile World Congress in February. The portfolio consists of the flagship Nokia 8 Sirocco, the upper mid-range Nokia 7 Plus, the lower mid-range/budget Nokia 6.1, and the entry-level Nokia 1 Android Go phone. All of these phones were launched in India last month, with the Nokia 8 Sirocco being positioned as a high-end flagship that costs Rs. 49,999 ($737).

The Nokia 7 Plus, however, is much cheaper in India. It's available for Rs. 25,999 ($383) — nearly half the price of the Nokia 8 Sirocco. The phone's list of specifications includes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 system-on-chip, 4GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage, 6-inch Full HD+ (2160×1080) IPS LCD, dual 12MP + 13MP (telephoto) rear cameras, and a 3,800mAh battery. It ships with stock Android 8.1 Oreo, and is part of the Android One platform.

At launch, the phone had support for 4G VoLTE in one SIM slot, while the other SIM supported only 3G. This meant that dual 4G VoLTE was absent. The use of 4G and VoLTE has increased exponentially in India since 2016 because of the rise of Jio. Until 2018, smartphones had the ability to only have an active 4G VoLTE connection in one SIM slot, while the other SIM slot would be restricted to 3G (that is, both SIM slots could not simultaneously get 4G voice and data).

The Honor View 10, the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, and recent Oppo smartphones such as the Realme 1 do have support for true dual 4G VoLTE. HMD Global had stated earlier this month that the Nokia 7 Plus would soon receive an update to enable dual 4G VoLTE, and the company has now delivered.

The latest V2.22A update brings support for 4G VoLTE on both SIMs for the Nokia 7 Plus. The update also brings general user interface enhancements and improved system stability. Face Unlock is not available in the update, although the company stated at the launch event that the phone will receive the feature in an update.

The V2.22A update also brings May security patches for the phone. It has a download size of 441.7MB, and is now arriving via OTA in India. Notably, users can also install Android P beta on the Nokia 7 Plus.
